The Ducal Palace and its treasures

The ducal palace was designed by architect Francesco Di Giorgio Martini in 1470 and commissioned by the Montefeltro and the Della Rovere families, and was subsequently completed by the architect Girolamo Genga. The palace houses the Civic Museum with its many treasures as well as an historic library with 40,000 volumes.

The Civic Museum comprises paintings, collections of ceramics and terracotta, etchings, among which is the marvellous print of the Triumph of Carlo V and drawings by artists such as Raffaellino del Colle and Federico Barocci. There is a 1491 edition of Dante Alighieri's Commedia, a 1528 edition of Baldassar Castiglione's Cortegiano, the 1583 sonnets of Torquato Tasso and the will of the last duke of Urbino, Francesco Maria II Della Rovere, who died at Casteldurante in 1631.

There is also an excellent collection of 20th century drawings and the two famous geograhic globes of inestimable worth made in 1541 and 1551 by the Flemish Gerhard Kremer, called Mercatore, the inventor of modern nautical maps. The entire palace may be visited, from its towers with its panoramic loggia over the Metauro river, its spiral ramp which winds down to the cellars where the History of Agriculture and Crafts Museum is housed.
